Putting myself first My Journey Recovering From Cancer Imagine you are driving down PCH in your preserved red RX-7 FD. The engine is roaring, windows down playing “Objects in the Mirror” by Mac Miller. Suddenly you notice your precious car starts to make some weird noises. The noise gets louder. And louder. You start to worry that something might actually be wrong with your car. The uncertainty is frightening, you almost do not want to find out what is wrong with your treasured possession. Then, the car comes to a complete stop. You sit on the side of the road waiting for a mechanic to come; (you paid good money for this car for it to become obsolete!). Anxious as to what may be wrong with your beautiful new car you are determined to fix it. Except in my scenario, the car was my health and the mechanic was my treatment and recovery.  Now in remission, I want to share what I have learned and how my perspective towards life has changed. American Like Me - America Ferrera I chose to read American Like Me because I feel that I resonate with Ferrera's cultural identity being intertwined in Latin and American roots. I am intrigued by the wide variety of stories from different backgrounds that make up the American culture. So far, I have really enjoyed how personal each story feels. I really like how the book defines what being 'American' is, which is very multifaceted and full of other cultures blending together to form specific identities. Personally I feel very disconnected with Mexican culture; as a Mexican immigrant it is very frustrating when you feel like a foreigner both here in the US as well as in Mexico.  I really hope this book teaches me more about how cultural backgrounds shape people's identities here in the US in order to gain a deeper understanding of who I am.  After reading this book, I hope to gain direction in my search for my identity.
Lifeguard Lifeguarding has been the most rewarding job I’ve ever had. As a young person, it is a job where you get to enjoy the hot California sun by the pool. Though at times the job can get very tough and demanding on the body. I would say the job is easy 9 months out of the year. Unfortunately for the months of June, July and August I cannot say the same. Though the days were hot, you do get a lot of time to be in the pool while monitoring the patron’s safety. While you are on tower monitoring patrons, you have a lot of time to speak to the customers. I really enjoyed getting involved in the swimming community at my local pool.     A lifeguard is someone whose main job is to prevent emergencies. Although a lifeguard is pretty much the first responder when there is an emergency (although not considered a professional first responder), our job is to make sure patrons are making smart decisions that do not put their safety at risk. Although much of the job is very fun....
