American Like Me - America Ferrera
I chose to read American Like Me because I feel that I resonate with Ferrera's cultural identity being intertwined in Latin and American roots. I am intrigued by the wide variety of stories from different backgrounds that make up the American culture. So far, I have really enjoyed how personal each story feels. I really like how the book defines what being 'American' is, which is very multifaceted and full of other cultures blending together to form specific identities.
Personally I feel very disconnected with Mexican culture; as a Mexican immigrant it is very frustrating when you feel like a foreigner both here in the US as well as in Mexico. I really hope this book teaches me more about how cultural backgrounds shape people's identities here in the US in order to gain a deeper understanding of who I am. After reading this book, I hope to gain direction in my search for my identity.
