Mac Miller is my favorite artist of all time. He is quite the inspirational figure. Being a white rapper in a predominantly Black art form, race played a huge role in his upbringing as an artist. At the beginning of his career, he released the mixtape "K.I.D.S," which became a classic hit. The album speaks about a teenager growing up in the suburbs and being a renegade. There is some irony to this album in how he was a renegade in suburbia. I believe Mac Miller was very aware this was the perspective and identity he wanted to portray through this album. K.I.D.S. would go on to set the stage for his future works and what became the Mac Miller genre.

As he continued to develop throughout his career, he released Blue Slide Park, his first studio album centered around Mac Miller developing his own artistic identity and style.  His second studio album and my personal favorite album, Watching Movies with the Sound Off, was where Mac Miller really started to delve into abstract concepts of relationships and express his deep emotions in his music. The album was created while Mac Miller watched Turtles: The Incredible Journey, so it functions as an alternate soundtrack. When played alongside the film, the music syncs with the scenes.

WMWTSO holds a very special place in my heart. The song Objects in the Mirror is my favorite song of all time. The song's meaning is about leaving behind what has happened to you in the past, and although you may look in the mirror, those objects are being left behind while you look forward. I use this philosophy very often in my life, and whenever I'm having a tough day, I know that song is there for me to cheer me up, always.

  4. Really heartfelt post—your connection to Mac Miller’s journey and evolution comes through with clarity and respect. The way you unpack Watching Movies with the Sound Off and tie Objects in the Mirror to your own life adds depth without getting overly sentimental. You could probably dig even more into how his later work built on that emotional and philosophical foundation, but this already paints a vivid picture of why he resonates so deeply with you.
